PERCENT SONG

When you work with percents you look out the window

When you work with percents, that’s all you have to do.

When you work with percents put numbers in the window

When you work with percents your worries are through.

You write in the part, underneath you put the total

Put percent on the top, write 100 below.

Where a number is missing, put an X in its place

After you’ve done this, then you’re ready to go.

Get out the golf club draw a handle through the numbers

Multiply along the handle, divide what’s alone

Your problem is done now, percents are so easy

We can pack up now, for its time to go home.

Teacher Notes

  1. Draw a 2X2 “window” on the board.  All we have to do is fill in the 4 panels and the problem is through  (look out the window).
  2. Part/Total = Percent/100.   Just read the problem and fill in the blanks.
  3. Draw a slanted line between 2 of the given numbers, and circle the remaining number…thus giving the appearance of a golf club.

The “X” is outside the “club”.

  1. Multiply the numbers on the “handle”, then divide by the circled number.  The result is the value of the missing “X”.
  2. Every percent problem has a 100, two given values, and the student is asked to find the missing value.  The “window” method is simple and easy to do.
